Eta Carinae is an old blue hypergiant star. It has more than 100 solar masses. It lies 7,500 light-years away. Its spectral class is B0 (temperature of about 72,000 degrees Fahrenheit), and it lies in the Carina Nebula. As you see in the image, Eta Carinae is boxed in the Keyhole Nebula. It is also a Luminous Blue Variable (LBV), with the luminosity of 5 million times that of the Sun. It is expected to go hypernova or supernova within the next 10,000 years. Its approximate age is about 3 million years old. It is located in the constellation of Carina and its magnitude is 6.
Rumors of danger if it goes
A lot of sites are making rumors that if it dies, it will go gamma-ray burst and leave behind a black hole. There are also a lot of people that disagree, due to the fact that gamma-ray bursts could only cause damage within 6,000 light-years or less.
